Working on purpose.

Even before ‘purpose’ became a buzzword in today’s corporate world, I have pushed to be involved in projects that aim to make the world a better place. CSR is no longer about volunteering, but a must-have for any corporation that looks to attract great talent and contribute to a prosperous, sustainable future.

Since 2015, Bloomberg’s CTO has run Data for Good Exchange, part of a long tradition of advocacy for using data science and human capital to solve problems at the core of society. This day-long forum enables participants from academia, industry, government and NGOs to share insights and progress on applying modern machine learning and data science methods to problems in public and non-profit sectors.

In 2019, the theme revolved around the UN's Sustainable Development Goals. So we developed a series of illustrations inspired by some of the projects presented at the forum.

Data For Good Exchange was rebranded in 2016. Its current look and feel has been at the heart of everything we produce for the conference year after year.

When the COVID-19 hit NYC in 2020, The Government of New York and New Jersey launched COVID Alert, an app that notifies users of potential COVID-19 exposure while maintaining user privacy and security.

When I heard about an alliance bringing together New York’s tech firms to help with this effort, I was able to bring Bloomberg’s resources together to further the campaign’s design production and distribution efforts, in order to achieve the most amount of downloads.

My team contributed by producing more than 500,000 assets for canvassing and fly posting all over NYC. We worked our internal connections to have the campaign appear across the Bloomberg News network, and on the Morgan Stanley and Nasdaq digital signage on Times Square. With our grass route work, 1.5 million New Yorkers are keeping safe by downloading and updating the app on a regular basis.

My team worked to provide canvassers, businesses and local organizations across NYC with over 500,000 printed assets, including posters, stickers and decals. We also produced a digital pack and social media kit for their handles.

The LCS team is very attached to their graphic identity, but it was not visible enough on signage. So we helped optimize the typography for higher impact and visibility.

When hurricane Irma hit the Caribbean in 2017, the Island of St. John, part of the USVI, saw itself in the eye of the storm. Love City Strong (LCS) serves the community in the areas of disaster preparedness and disaster response, with an emphasis on strengthening community resilience. As a partner, Bloomberg Philanthropies and the Secunda Family Foundation helped LCS by providing funding, supplies and marketing infrastructure to build a sustainable resource stream in case of need.

My team provided critical graphics support, building simple infographics so the recovery works could be tracked effectively.

We designed and distributed posters like these among recovery bases in St. Johns. These visualizations helped the recovery teams keep track of their progress. The posters were produced as very simple grayscale graphics so they could be filled in with a marker as the recovery efforts progressed.

We designed signage and graphics for the recovery teams, as well as an optimized logo that is easy to use both in signage and social media. And helped design swag to help them raise funds through their online store.
